Journal Reflection Module 5: Evaluation and Assessments
Reflection Prompt: How has technology impacted or changed your classroom assessment and evaluation? Has your data collection methodology changed with technology? If technology has not impacted your assessment and evaluation, what would you like to change? Discuss technology and your own productivity and professional practice.
Description:
After reading and viewing videos about evaluation and assessments, some of them material talked about applying these tools..
Impact:
I use data with my students and teachers to assess progress and determine what interventions are needed to reach pre-determined goals. We had to rely on a few subtests and then enter student data into the computer. Then we analyzed results and made determinations about instructional needs. Students then could take assessments on-line and we’d get a print out with objectives and teaching strategies. We still have to make the final instructional determinations based on knowledge of the students. Now we are seeing programs where the program determines when to move to next level and when to review while teacher can get printouts for reporting purposes. I find that tools come into the classroom and even though there is training, it’s soon lost in everything else that’s going on in the classroom. I use the print outs and ask for moare assessments as needed. This has gotten easier with Web2.0 productivity tools. I have used apps to track behavior and academics, like 'Teacher Pal', Groovy Grader', and 'Socrative. I use these on my iPad or iPhone in classrooms but at times the tools are a distracton for the students who don't see them often. As tools are introduced the teachers forget to make the final decision and not let the program or tool do it for them. The tools are beneficial and can give use great data to use in determining what our students need and how to learn it. Teachers still need on-going training and practice in how to do this.
Intent:
I plan on setting up more training for teachers to learn how to view and interpret data provided to them through technology tools. There are many aspects of each technology tools and the teachers barely learn them so that they can effectively and efficiently use them to determine instruction. Assessments are one of these areas. Teacher collaborative would be a beneficial way to have teachers review assessments and determine the most effective and efficient instruction for their students. The assessment tools that will be brought into two buildings will provide more detailed information on whether an intervention is having the desired effect of if the intervention needs to be changed. I will investigate the assessment tools available to see which will meet the needs of the teaching staff for assesssing the students.
